Abstract

Abstract in english

The present study examines the solo exhibition of Yannis Tsarouchis at the Il Gabbiano Gallery in Rome in 1974. The exhibition constitutes a significant milestone in the artist’s overall artistic trajectory, as both the works exhibited and his stated intentions marked a departure from those associated with his earlier exhibitions. Interest in this exhibition arose from the observation that, despite its pivotal significance as a turning point in the artistic development of Yannis Tsarouchis, it has not, to date, been the subject of systematic research. Through his study of seventeenth-and nineteenth-century Western painting, the artist sought to compine his personal pictorial interests with the techniques of the classical tradition, pursuing a form of discipline through apprenticeship to earlier models. The research is based on Tsarouchis’s autobiography and writings, as well as on primary sources and secondary bibliography, including studies on the artist’s life and work and on the historical and artistic context of his time. The exhibition catalogue is also examined as an independent object of research. The study investigates the networks within the art world that made the exhibition possible. The works in the exhibition are also examined in terms of their formal and thematic relationships. Particular emphasis is placed on the concept of “study”, understood not merely as technical practice but as a broader process of apprenticeship and experimentation. At the same time, the allegorical series of the Four Seasons and the Dance, as well as the reappearance of figures and motifs from earlier works, are explored. The connections among the individual compositions and the dialogue with art history form a self-referential visual system. The exhibition thus reveals a body of painting that does not simply return to the past but transforms the Western tradition into a new visual language.
