Abstract
Στη παρούσα εργασία γίνεται μια παρουσίαση του καλλιτεχνικού ρεύματος της Pop Art μέσα από τα μάτια και τα κείμενα του Αμερικανού κριτικού τέχνης Clement Greenberg, o οποίος αποτέλεσε μία από τις πιο εμβληματικές προσωπικότητες της Αμερικανικής καλλιτεχνικής σκηνής το δεύτερο μισό του 20ου αιώνα. Παράλληλα μια ακόμα έννοια που θα εξεταστεί στην εργασία είναι αυτή του φορμαλισμού, καθώς επηρέασε τον τρόπο σκέψης και προσέγγισης των καλλιτεχνικών πραγμάτων για τον Greenberg. Όπως θα δούμε «για μισό αιώνα ο Greenberg τοποθέτησε τον εαυτό του στο απόλυτο κέντρο της συζήτησης που αφορά το παρελθόν και το μέλλον του μοντερνισμού»1 και αυτό γιατί ήταν ο ίδιος που διαμόρφωσε τη «μοντερνιστική» θεωρία, δηλαδή τη συζήτηση γύρω από το μοντερνισμό. Θα σταθούμε ιδιαίτερα στο πως στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του ’60, τότε που ο Greenberg βρίσκονταν στο απόγειο της καριέρας του και ασχολήθηκε διεξοδικά με την επεξεργασία μιας θεωρίας του μοντερνισμού μολονότι όπως παρατηρεί o James Meyer σε άρθρο του με τίτλο “Back to tomorrow: Pop Art”, το 2004 στο περιοδικό Artforum, ο Greenberg δεν δημοσίευσε ποτέ δοκίμιο για το θέμα και οι παρατηρήσεις σε συνεντεύξεις και κείμενα του στην ανθολογία των γραπτών του John O’Brian υποδηλώνουν μία περιφρόνηση για το καλλιτεχνικό φαινόμενο της Pop Art, εν τούτοις οι αναφορές στην Ποπ, μας αποκαλύπτουν πληροφορίες τόσο για τον ίδιο τον Greenberg όσο και για την Ποπ έτσι όπως την αντιλαμβανόταν. Κλείνοντας, ελπίζουμε ότι θα έχουμε οδηγηθεί σε μια σφαιρική εικόνα τόσο για το έργο και τη δράση του Clement Greenberg αλλά και ειδικά για τη σχέση του με το καλλιτεχνικό ρεύμα της Pop Art.
Abstract in english
This paper presents the art movement Pop Art through the eyes and the texts of the American art critic Clement Greenberg, who was one of the most emblematic figures of the American art scene in the second half of the 20th century. At the same time, another term that will be examined in the paper, in extend, is that of formalism, since it influenced the way Greenberg thought and approach the artistic things. As we will also see “for a half century, Greenberg located himself in the ultimate center of the debate concerning the past and the future of modernism” and that because he was the one who formulated the “modernist” theory, that is, the debate around modernism. We will focus particularly on how in the early 1960s, when Greenberg was at the height of his career and thoroughly dealt with the elaboration of a theory of modernism, even though as James Meyer observed, in an article of Artforum in 2004 with the title “Pop Art: Back to tomorrow”, Greenberg never published an essay on the subject and the comments in interviews and texts in his anthology in John O’ Brian’s writings suggest a contempt for the art phenomenon of Pop Art, therefore the references to the Pop, reveal to usinformation about both Greenberg himself and the Pop as he perceived it. In closing, we hope that we will be led into an overview of Clement Greenberg’s work and action, but especially for his relationship with the art movement of Pop Art.
