Abstract
Η παρούσα εργασία σκιαγραφεί τη διαδρομή του είδους που καλείται φιλμ-δοκίμιο (essay-film) και τις σχέσεις του συγκεκριμένου είδους με τη μνήμη η οποία διεκδικεί χώρο μεταξύ θεσμικών ιστορικών αφηγήσεων που φέρουν αξιώσεις αντικειμενικότητας και μνημονικών θραυσμάτων που συχνά βρίσκονται στην επικράτεια της υποκειμενικής ενατένισης. Για τον σκοπό αυτόν αναλύονται πολιτικές και εικαστικές αναζητήσεις της «Αριστερής Όχθης» και του «Γαλλικού Νέου Κύματος», μελετώνται έργα που συνέβαλαν στην ανάδειξη προσταγμάτων του φεμινιστικού κινήματος και εξετάζεται η σχέση ορισμένων φιλμικών δοκιμίων με την κριτική στη νεωτερική κοινωνική οργάνωση καθώς και με απόπειρες ψηλάφησης μιας αντί-δημόσιας σφαίρας. Η εργασία αυτή αποτελεί, ταυτόχρονα, το πλαίσιο εντός του οποίου τοποθετώ το έργο μου Αθήνα, αγάπη μου, ένα φιλμ-δοκίμιο που αναζητά στο σώμα τής πόλης της Αθήνας μνημονικά ίχνη που βρίσκονται στο «υπέδαφος» της σύγχρονης πολιτικής ιστορίας της. Πρόκειται για το εικαστικό σκέλος της εργασίας το οποίο, επίσης, επιχειρεί να συμβάλει στη διερεύνηση τού υπό εξέταση είδους, φιλοδοξώντας να αποτελέσει ένα μνημείο εν χρόνο που αντιβαίνει στη συνήθη πρακτική των σκληρών υλικών αποκρυσταλλώσεων.
Abstract in english
This Masters Dissertation traces the trajectory of the essay-film and the relationship of this genre with memory. In particular, the dissertation approaches memory as a zone between institutional historical narratives, considered to be objective, and mnemic fragments that often lie in the realm of subjective contemplation. To this effect, the analysis considers, selectively, the political and aesthetic quests of the “Left Bank” and the “French New Wave” as well as films which responded to feminist politics. I also examine how specific essay-films critique the organisation of modern societies and if, and in what ways, they can be connected with efforts to articulate a counter-public sphere. The dissertation provides also the context for my essay-film called Athens, my love (2022, 22 min), as the major practice-based component of the MA in Digital Arts. Through a voice-over that engages two fictional interlocutors (a woman and a man) in a scripted dialogue, still and moving images from contemporary Athens and archives, as well as interviews, this essayistic moving-image work looks for mnemic traces that underlie the contemporary political history of Athens since the 1940s. As the visual part of my research and an experiment with the essay-film genre, Athens, my love is proposed as a narrative, time-based memorial against dominant spatial practices of memorialization.
