Abstract
Η προτεινόμενη πτυχιακή εργασία πραγματεύεται τις σύνθετες διαδικασίες συγκρότησης της ελληνορθόδοξης κοινότητας Βενετίας, κατά τον 16ο και 17ο αιώνα. Συγκεκριμένα, θέτει στο επίκεντρο τον εμβληματικό ναό του Αγίου Γεωργίου των Ελλήνων (San Giorgio dei Greci, 1527), στη συνοικία Castello, και τον εικονογραφικό του διάκοσμο, καθώς για αιώνες υπήρξε σημείο αναφοράς για τους Έλληνόφωνους εμιγκρέδες στη Γαληνοτάτη. Το εσωτερικό του ναού, κατεξοχήν παράδειγμα μιας μικτής βυζαντινο-βενετικής τέχνης, πορίζει διαδοχικές φάσεις επιζωγράφησης, δύναται δε να συνδεθεί με την δράση επώνυμων ζωγράφων που φτάνουν κατά κύματα από τις βενετοκρατούμενες περιοχές της ανατολικής Μεσογείου. Στην εργασία επιχειρείται η λεπτομερής χαρτογράφηση των επάλληλων επιχειρήσεων εικονογράφησης του ναού και η ανάλυσή τους σε σχέση με σημαντικές στιγμές στην ιστορία της κοινότητας, οι οποίες πιθανώς αποτυπώνουν συλλογικές ταυτοτικές μετατοπίσεις εντός των ορίων της ελληνόφωνης κοινότητας της Βενετίας.
Abstract in english
This undergraduate thesis examines the complex processes involved in the formation of the Greek Orthodox community of Venice during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It focuses on the emblematic Church of San Giorgio dei Greci (1527), located in the Castello district, and its iconographic decoration, as the church served for centuries as a central point of reference for the Greek-speaking émigré community in the Most Serene Republic of Venice. The church interior, a distinguished example of a hybrid Byzantine–Venetian artistic tradition, preserves successive phases of painted decoration that can be associated with the activity of identified painters who arrived in waves from the Venetian-ruled regions of the eastern Mediterranean. This thesis seeks to provide a detailed mapping of the successive campaigns of the church's pictorial decoration and to analyze them in relation to significant moments in the history of the Greek Orthodox community. In doing so, it explores the extent to which these artistic interventions reflect collective shifts in identity within the Greek-speaking community of Venice.
