This thesis examines the gendered dimension of art history in Greece, focusing on the public presence and participation of women in art exhibitions from the late nineteenth century to the early decades of the twentieth century. The study is grounded in the observation that Greek art historiography has been shaped by one-dimensional, androcentric narratives that have not only largely excluded women creators, but have also consolidated gendered classifications and hierarchies, such as the dichotomies between “high” art and “tradition,” “modernism” and the “decorative arts”, etc. Adopting a feminist methodological framework, the present research does not seek merely to add women artists to an already established historical narrative, but rather to critically reassess the very terms, methods, and hierarchies through which the history of art in Greece has been constructed. Particular emphasis is placed on gender as a determining factor in cultural production, in the formulation of the term “professional” visual artist, and in the institutional recognition of artistic labor. The first part of the dissertation analyzes the broader sociopolitical and ideological context within which the earliest public appearances of women artists emerged, as well as the ways in which the so-called “women’s question” gradually shifted from the margins to the center of public discourse. This section also examines the development of the Greek art scene and the conditions that enabled or hindered women’s access to artistic education, exhibition opportunities, and professional visibility. The second part draws on primary archival material, with particular emphasis on exhibition catalogues and data from the digital archive of the National Gallery – Alexandros Soutsos Museum. Through both quantitative and qualitative analysis, the study maps the presence of the first “professional” women visual artists in Greece, highlighting patterns of inclusion and exclusion, as well as the methodological challenges inherent in working with fragmentary and gender-biased historical sources. Finally, the research proposes a more inclusive historiographical approach, arguing that the recognition of gender bias is not merely a matter of equity, but a prerequisite for a deeper understanding of art history itself. By foregrounding gender as an analytical category throughout the historical narrative, the study challenges entrenched certainties and calls for a reassessment of long-standing frameworks. The aim is to contribute to the expansion of the research field and to the development of new interpretative tools for the study of Greek artistic production – and beyond, advocating for a historiography that acknowledges both the complexity of cultural processes and the central role of gender relations in shaping artistic value.en
