Abstract

Abstract in english

The present study examines the relationship between Symbolism in the visual arts and Gothic fiction during the nineteenth century, focusing on a specific interartistic comparison that remains relatively underexplored in the existing scholarship. Its aim is to investigate the degree of affinity between the two fields through the identification of shared thematic concerns and motifs. Particular emphasis is placed on concepts such as darkness, the supernatural, and the uncanny, as well as on ambiguity, forbidden desire, and the relationship between eroticism and death, which function as points of intersection between visual and literary expression. A central focus of the study is the dark female figure and, more specifically, the figure of the femme fatale, which acquires particular significance in the art and literature of the late nineteenth century. Her threatening presence in both Symbolist and Gothic works reflects deeper cultural anxieties surrounding female desire and the subversion of traditional gender roles. This figure is characteristically represented in Gustave Moreau’s Salomé dansant devant Hérode (Salome Dancing before Herod, 1876) and L’Apparition (The Apparition, 1876), as well as in Franz von Stuck’s Die Sünde (The Sin, 1893), and is compared with the novella Carmilla (1872) by the Irish writer Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. Carmilla was published before the full development of Symbolism in France, a fact that makes their comparison particularly productive. The study examines the ways in which related motifs are transformed across different artistic media. The eponymous heroine, Carmilla, transforms the figure of the femme fatale, as her desire is directed towards another woman, Laura. Laura’s ambivalent response, in which attraction, fear, and repulsion coexist, also allows Carmilla to be examined as the embodiment of a different form of female power and desire. The visual works are situated within the aesthetic climate of the fin de siècle, in which death, sexuality, and the supernatural acquire particular significance, while the earlier Carmilla displays thematic affinities with these concerns. The study thus seeks to contribute to the understanding of nineteenth-century interartistic relations by highlighting a less foregrounded but significant aesthetic and thematic affinity between Gothic fiction and Symbolism in the visual arts.
