| dc.description.abstracttranslated | This thesis critically examines the biography of Eleni Boukouri-Altamura (1821-1900), who is classified in the literature as the first Greek woman painter to receive systematic artistic training and to work professionally. Taking feminist art historiography as its starting point, it investigates how her image was shaped through the first three historiographical narratives, those of Kallirroi Parren (1890, 1900), Saverio Altamura (1896) and Athina Tarsouli (1934), and how these were reproduced in the later literature. The analysis identifies some of the schemas of biographical discourse: the gendered roles of the daughter, the pupil-wife and the mother, the “artistic daemon” and the concept of the artist-martyr, the narrative of disguise, examined here as cross-dressing, and the inscription of the painter within national significations. These schemas obscured the conditions of her training and her work. The thesis then situates the painter within the Italian artistic field of the mid-nineteenth century and examines, through the lens of transnational art education, her relationship with the British painter Jane Benham Hay. Their relationship is examined through the biographical narratives, archival research in exhibition catalogues and archives in Rome and Florence, and the works associated with the two women. The comparison brings to light two very different trajectories, both of which nonetheless took shape largely outside the official artistic institutions, as well as their unequal visibility in the archives and in historiography. The thesis concludes that women artists need to be studied critically and on the basis of evidence, beyond biographical schemas, and, more specifically, that the painter’s surviving work needs to be studied systematically, so that the works illuminate her life and not the reverse. | en |
