| dc.description.abstract | Η παρούσα διπλωματική εργασία εξετάζει το γοτθικό μυθιστόρημα Φράνκενσταϊν: ή, ο Σύγχρονος Προμηθέας (Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus,1818) της Mary Shelley υπό το πρίσμα της αλχημικής παράδοσης, με στόχο να αναδείξει τον τρόπο με τον οποίο η Αλχημεία λειτουργεί στο κείμενο ως συγκροτημένο ερμηνευτικό πλαίσιο. Η Αλχημεία (ως όρος ταυτόσημος με τον Ερμητισμό) αναδεικνύεται ως συνεκτικό επιστημονικό παράδειγμα και μελετάται μέσω της ιδιαίτερης σχέσης θεωρίας και πρακτικής που τη διέπει, καθώς και μέσω των ρητορικών και σημειωτικών στρατηγικών της, όπως η αλληγορία, η αποσιώπηση και η κρυπτογραφία. Η γοτθική μυθοπλασία, με τη σειρά της, αναδεικνύεται σε προνομιακό χώρο επανεμφάνισης αποκλεισμένων ή περιθωριοποιημένων μορφών γνώσης, όπου η αλχημική σκέψη ενσωματώνεται οργανικά στην αισθητική λειτουργία του λογοτεχνικού είδους. Το Frankenstein προσεγγίζεται ως κείμενο στο οποίο η λογοτεχνική φαντασία, η ιστορία των επιστημών και η αλχημική σκέψη συνυφαίνονται, συγκροτώντας έναν σύνθετο χώρο στοχασμού γύρω από τα όρια της γνώσης, της δημιουργίας και της ηθικής ευθύνης. Οι αλχημικές και επιστημονικές αναφορές του κειμένου αντιμετωπίζονται ως φορείς βαθύτερης εννοιολογικής λειτουργίας. Σε αντίθεση με ερμηνευτικές προσεγγίσεις του μυθιστορήματος που περιορίζονται είτε σε επιφανειακή καταγραφή αλχημικών ονομάτων είτε σε αναγνώσεις που ταυτίζουν την Αλχημεία με «προεπιστημονικά» σφάλματα, η παρούσα έρευνα προτείνει μια διαφορετική μεθοδολογική οπτική. Η Αλχημεία εξετάζεται ως ιστορικά προσδιορισμένο καθεστώς γνώσης: ως θεωρητική και πειραματική παράδοση, ως γλώσσα απόκρυψης και φανέρωσης, και ως πολιτισμική μνήμη. Η διττή της υπόσταση –κυριολεκτική και αλληγορική– καθίσταται εμφανής στη λειτουργία του εργαστηρίου στο μυθιστόρημα, το οποίο συγκροτείται ως τόπος μυστικότητας και ηθικής αμφισημίας, όπου η δημιουργία ζωής παραμένει εν μέρει άρρητη και μη αναπαραστάσιμη. Η αφηγηματική αποσιώπηση της ίδιας της διαδικασίας της δημιουργίας λειτουργεί ως στρατηγική η οποία αντλεί από την αλχημική παράδοση της απόκρυψης. Μέσα από αυτή τη συνθήκη, η πράξη της δημιουργίας μετατρέπεται από τεχνικό εγχείρημα σε φιλοσοφικό και ερμηνευτικό πρόβλημα. Συνολικά, η μελέτη υποστηρίζει μια ερμηνεία του Frankenstein όπου η Αλχημεία λειτουργεί ως ενεργή δομή νοήματος, καθιστώντας ορατές τις αμφισημίες της νεωτερικής γνώσης, οι οποίες παραμένουν επίκαιρες μέχρι σήμερα. | |
| dc.description.abstracttranslated | This thesis examines Mary Shelley's Gothic novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus (1818) in the light of the alchemical tradition, with the aim of highlighting the way in which Alchemy functions in the text as a coherent interpretative framework. Alchemy (as a term synonymous to Hermeticism) emerges as a consistent scientific example and is studied through the relationship between theory and practice, as well as through its rhetorical and semiotic strategies, such as allegory, silence, and cryptography. Gothic fiction, in turn, emerges as a privileged space for the reappearance of excluded or marginalized forms of knowledge, where alchemical thought is organically integrated into the aesthetic function of the literary genre. Frankenstein is approached as a text in which literary imagination, the history of science and alchemical thought converge, forming a complex space for reflection on the limits of knowledge, creation, and moral responsibility. Alchemical and scientific textual references are treated here as vehicles of a deeper conceptual function. In contrast to interpretative approaches of the novel that are limited either to a superficial recording of alchemical names or to readings that identify Alchemy with “pre-scientific” errors, this research proposes a different methodological perspective. Alchemy is examined as a historically determined regime of knowledge: as a theoretical and experimental tradition, as a language of concealment and revelation, and as a cultural memory. Its dual nature –literal and allegorical– becomes apparent in the function of the laboratory in the novel, which is constructed as a place of mystery and moral ambiguity, where the creation of life remains partly inexpressible and unrepresentable. The narrative silencing of the process of creation itself functions as a strategy that draws on the alchemical tradition of concealment. Through this condition, the act of creation is transformed from a technical endeavor into a philosophical and interpretive problem. Overall, the study supports an interpretation of Frankenstein in which alchemy functions as an active structure of meaning, revealing the ambiguities of modern knowledge, which remain relevant to this day. | en |
