Abstract

Abstract in english

This study examines the evolution of the art market and auctions from antiquity to the contemporary era, tracing the transition from the feudal system of patronage of the 15th century towards the modern capitalist market mechanism. Following a historical investigation of the major auction houses Christie’s and Sotheby’s and an analysis of contemporary art market institutions (art fairs, mega-galleries, online platforms), the study focuses on the incident involving the self-destruction of Banksy’s Girl with Balloon, which took place at the Sotheby’s auction house in 2018. This incident serves as a case study for investigating the relationship between Street Art and the institutional art market. In particular, the legal implications of the destruction, the rights of artists and buyers, as well as the role of intermediary organizations are examined. Drawing on the sociological approach of the example of the Academies developed by the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, the study argues that auctions function not merely as economic mechanisms but as complex systems of meaning production and mechanisms of mediation that shape artistic value and social hierarchy, adapting to new forms of art while simultaneously maintaining their dominant position in the market.
