| dc.description.abstracttranslated | This thesis examines, historically and theoretically, how the artistic subject was transformed during periods of technological rupture, taking photography as a starting point and artificial intelligence (AI) as a point of reference. The transformation is organized at the level of the creator’s intention, as photography and AI are seen as expressions of a common genealogy, in which creative functions are externalized into technical systems. The first part sets photography within the context of the Industrial Revolution, the advance of science and the rise of the bourgeoisie. Intention is destabilized along the strands of chance, the notion of nature as creator, and the loss of manual craft. The crisis extends to the gaze, through the mechanization of vision, which involves two interrelated dimensions: the impartial eye and the expansion of vision together with the optical unconscious. This is followed by photography’s claim to artistic status and the wider retreat of the creator’s authority in the twentieth century. The second part begins with an overview of AI as an artistic medium. The crisis shifts from the loss of intention to the attribution of intentionality to mechanical systems and unfolds along four axes: the attribution of intentionality (with Refik Anadol as an example), the diffusion of the creative process (Obvious), pseudo-randomness and entropy (model collapse), and the mechanical gaze (Trevor Paglen). In sum, both technologies emerge from the industrial organization of labour and the need to subject human processes to automated mediation. The apparent autonomy of the machine, however, conceals the human labour that sustains it and the choices of those who design and control it. Technological mediation does not necessarily abolish the artistic subject but forces it to reinvent itself. | en |
