This study examines the interwar reception of Greek antiquity within the French avant-garde, focusing on the work of André Masson and the dissident Surrealists rallied around Georges Bataille, Documents, and Acéphale. It argues that, during the 1920s and 1930s, ancient Greece was reconstructed as an archaic, violent and mystical domain. Within this framework, figures, myths, and ritual practices such as Dionysus, Orpheus, the Minotaur, Pasiphaë, the labyrinth, sparagmos, and the Acephale are examined as vehicles for the modernist resignification of antiquity. Methodologically, the study combines reception studies, historiographical analysis, close readings of primary texts and the iconographic and formal analysis of works of art. Its corpus comprises selected drawings and paintings by Masson from the 1920s to the early 1940s, considered in relation to texts, images and practices of page design in Cahiers d’art, Le Voyage en Grèce, Documents, Minotaure, and Acéphale. The study investigates the conditions under which pre-Classical, Minoan, Cycladic, and Dionysian-Orphic Greece was reappropriated as the “internal Other” of the European tradition and argues that Masson’s turn towards Greek mythology and archaic forms of the sacred must be understood as more than a thematic or iconographic choice. It was connected to broader interwar processes of the primitivist reconstruction of Greece, the anti-classicist critique advanced by avant-garde periodicals, and the formation of a Dionysian-Orphic mysticism within Bataille’s circle. In the material under consideration, mysticism designates forms of ecstasy, loss of self, bodily fragmentation, and the transgression of the boundaries of the subject. The study’s contribution lies in bringing together two fields that have often been treated as distinct: the reception of Greece within the European avant-garde and Surrealism’s engagement with mysticism, the sacred, and ritual violence. It demonstrates that the “Dark Greece” of the dissident Surrealists constituted a crucial field through which the avant-garde reconstructed Greek antiquity as a domain of chthonic cults, blood rites, Dionysian ecstasy, and Orphic sparagmos. In Masson’s work, scenes of slaughter, Dionysian and Orphic compositions, variations on the Minotaur and Pasiphaë, and the figure of the Acephale form a coherent iconographic system in which the frequently violent character of mystical experience is articulated through sacrifice, sparagmos, sexual violence and the deconstruction of the anthropocentric body.en
