Abstract
Abstract in english
This undergraduate thesis seeks to map the political and diplomatic contexts surrounding the marriage of the Byzantine princess Theophanu (972) to Otto II (955–983), emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. It will also examine the ways in which, and the reasons why, the power and position of the Ottonian empress evolved, as well as the artistic production associated with Theophanu and the period of her rule. Particular emphasis will be placed on the broader political transformations of the period that enabled Theophanu to exercise an active political role, as well as on the way her presence influenced the artistic production of the period.
